Principal Database Developer
Responsibilities
- Work closely with software engineers and systems engineers to design relational schemas, build secure and performant queries, implement PostGIS features, and drive improvements that support real-time operations.
- Design, develop, and maintain relational databases using AWS Aurora PostgreSQL.
- Create and optimize PostGIS-enabled schemas and geo-temporal queries for high-speed data retrieval.
- Define and implement complex security protocols for data filtering and redaction.
- Translate data models into normalized, relational schemas aligned with application requirements.
- Collaborate with developers to integrate and optimize database access via JPA/Hibernate and other persistence frameworks.
- Tune performance through advanced indexing, partitioning, and query optimization techniques.
- Set up and manage database environments, including schema version control and migration support.
- Establish secure, efficient structures to support evolving development needs and future scalability.
Skills
- Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience.
- At least five (5) years of experience in Database Administration, including installation, configuration, and maintenance of a Relational Database Management System (e.g., Oracle, PostgreSQL, or MySQL).
- SQL scripting experience.
- CompTIA Security+ certification (required for privileged access).
- Experience setting up and optimizing AWS Aurora PostgreSQL environments.
- Experience of relational data modeling and schema versioning in support of software development.
- Experience with query optimization, mapping tables to blocks and partitions, sub-table structure and keying/indexing for efficiency.
- Experience with PostGIS, ability to optimize geo temporal queries and indexes.
- Java Persistence (JPA) experience and an understanding of the coupling between+ JPA structure and the Database.
- Architecture experience: the ability to design schemas (and migrate schemas in place).
- Experience managing an operationally fielded Database while simultaneously being under further development.
- Experience with JPA/Hibernate structures and how they interact with the underlying database.
- Experience supporting classified or government systems with strict security requirements.
- Exposure to DevOps practices related to database deployment and automation.
- Experience as the sole or lead database expert on a development team.
- Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git/Bitbucket) and CI/CD integration.
- Familiarity with Java-based software ecosystems and schema integration in microservice architecture.
